Operation of rack and pinion
A rack or pinion is a rectangular rod that has teeth on one side such as a gear; essentially a gear with an infinite radius. The pinion, a small gear that engages in the teeth, rolls over the rack and thus creates a linear movement. (The linear movement is made by either the pinion or the rack.)
Application of racks and pinions in industry
Racks and pinions are mainly used in industry when a rotating drive must be converted into a straight-line movement. We see them in robotics, cutting machines, milling machines and processing tables, among other things. In these markets the rack often stands still and the pinion rolls over it.
