Network infrastructures of today are increasingly the carrier of various building-related installations. Where previously mainly telephony and data transmission were used, for example, camera security, access control or TV distribution now also run via IP networks. This technological development leads to significant savings, because fewer different infrastructures need to be installed. There is also a trend in the powering of installation components, where a shift is taking place from traditionally powered installation components to Power over Ethernet. Together with the network infrastructure, this forms the backbone of a building.

The ability to apply new technologies such as PoE coincides with the building design of the building. It is therefore important to work together with building owners, managers and building architects. Thinking about the building design at an early stage of construction is of great importance in the development of the network infrastructure.

Forehand has been known for sharing knowledge in various technical manuals for years. These manuals are now also provided with installation guidelines and project details regarding the passive infrastructure and additional guidelines regarding the optimal rollout of a PoE-enabled network.

The ratification of the IEEE802.3bt enables PoE installations up to 90 Watts. With this power it is possible to power PCs and screens via the network. These screens are therefore not equipped with a 230Volt power supply and are fully connected via the network. This also leads to lower energy consumption and lower management costs, in contemporary smart buildings the focus is often on the lowest possible energy consumption and efficient management and maintenance, which is made possible by devices that can be switched off when they are not needed.

In the presentation of Richard Vermeulen you will be informed about the developments concerning PoE and IP. The experiences gained concerning the cooperation between the different installation parts, and the most important results of the business case “Smart Hotel” will be discussed.
