The municipality of Eindhoven will have its real estate made more sustainable by the general partnership !IMPULS over the next ten years. Kuijpers is one of the partners, together with an architect, construction contractor and consultancy firm. The first to be renovated was the Stadhuistoren. Kuijpers renovated all the E and W installations and provided advanced building automation, based on Smart Building technology. The renovated Stadhuistoren was completed in 2018.

The Stadhuistoren in the heart of Eindhoven is over fifty years old and had to be completely stripped for the necessary improvements. Only the monumental facade remained intact. Behind it, the most modern facilities have been installed, both structurally and in terms of installation technology.

From label G to A
Kuijpers was responsible for the LED lighting, the climate and fire alarm system and the complete building automation. The required software was also written by Kuijpers. Result: the building went from energy label G to label A. Thanks to the application of Smart Building technology, building users can also count on a very high level of comfort.

Sensors collect data
Kuijpers has realised a Smart Building here. The technology is based on a fine-meshed, wireless sensor network; in the City Hall Tower, Kuijpers installed no fewer than 350 sensors in the ceilings. The sensors detect presence, measure the temperature, humidity and CO2 content in a room. Based on this data, the climate control system, air treatment and lighting automatically do their work when people are present. If a room is empty, they switch off. Energy-efficient, comfortable and easy, because employees no longer have to take action themselves to create a pleasant working environment. The sensor network will soon offer the municipal organisation even more convenience: thanks to all the data, it will also be able to perform indoor localisation of materials and people and automated workplace reservations in the near future.

Demand for smart buildings is increasing
According to system architect Tim de Grouw of Kuijpers, the future possibilities of a Smart Building are endless. “You do need to set up an open structure for it. That is what we have done here. By applying an open platform, the municipality can seamlessly integrate new applications and applications from all kinds of manufacturers and developers into the building.” The demand for Smart Building technology in commercial buildings is increasing rapidly, says Martin Staal, manager Building Automation and technical director of Kuijpers Specialist Solutions. “We have all become accustomed to technology and convenience. Just think of everything we can already operate wirelessly at home and can control and set via our smartphones. We want to be able to do that at the office too. We are therefore seeing that the desire for more sustainability and comfort is now being met by equipping more and more commercial buildings with advanced, smart building automation that can do everything.”
