To maximize the lifespan of an IoT device, a device's power consumption must be kept to an absolute minimum. This requires the use of low power consumption components and smart technology to de-energize components when not in use. During the E&A seminar 'IoT: What's next?' Sven de Coster from CN Rood discusses the measurement challenges and solutions in the development of a Low Power IoT device.
Determine the flow profile
To characterize the power profile of an IoT prototype, you must take the following into account:
– Device sleep mode (from nA to µA);
– Device standby modes (from hundreds of microamps to tens of milliamps);
– Active states (from milliamps to amps), including short bursts of current due to wireless transmissions.
The measurement solution must be able to record the correct current levels, and also have the correct measurement speed (a few microseconds) and a memory buffer to store the current profile.
Simulate any battery type
How low can the battery voltage drop before your IoT device turns off? Measuring battery performance at different stages of battery discharge is difficult because it requires instruments that can accurately simulate battery performance. There are complete solutions for assessing the power consumption and battery life of your IoT prototypes. It is also possible to model a battery.
During the lecture, Sven de Coster discusses the challenges and shows which measuring instruments (Keithley and Tektronix) are available to carry out the measurements.
