Nokia today announced that it will partner with MCS to deploy private wireless connectivity, networking equipment and analytics to The Ocean Cleanup, the international non-profit project developing and scaling technologies to rid the oceans of plastic.

This collaboration is in line with Nokia's enhanced environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy and fits seamlessly with its goal of advancing the role of technology in combating climate change and minimizing environmental impact.

Reducing environmental pressure through digitalization and connectivity

Nokia focuses on the role its products play in solving some of the world's most pressing challenges.

They do this by using connectivity and digitalization to restore stalled productivity, but also by providing inclusive access to opportunities and alleviating pressure on the environment and natural ecosystems. According to UNESCO, plastic waste accounts for 80% of all marine pollution and an estimated 8 to 10 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.

Nokia Digital Automation Cloud for The Ocean Cleanup in Pacific Ocean

MCS is Nokia's partner for the distribution of Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) in the Benelux. Together with Nokia they have successfully deployed the first private LTE (4G) wireless solution from Nokia DAC for The Ocean Cleanup activities in the North Pacific Ocean. More systems will be deployed at a later stage.

High-end video connectivity with 4G for better navigation

Nokia DAC is a high-performance, end-to-end private LTE (4G) wireless network and edge computing platform. The LTE connectivity, Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) and analytics will be used for various applications.

An example of this is high-end video connectivity via 4G technology. This supports The Ocean Cleanup’s work with navigation during the collection of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Technology for sustainability and nature conservation

5G, private wireless networks, edge computing, sensors, AI-based analytics, drones. These and other advanced technologies will play an increasingly crucial role in supporting the conservation and sustainability of our natural environment.

This is because these technologies provide direct, continuous, up-to-date information on the status of the environment, both on land and at sea. The partnership with The Ocean Cleanup offers the opportunity to explore this role further.

Nokia and MCS on the collaboration for this special project

Bas Piek, commercial director of MCS, about the collaboration: “We are very proud of this collaboration. In this way, we as MCS can use our knowledge and experience with private LTE and 5G networks to support the beautiful and important goals of The Ocean Cleanup.

Subho Mukherjee, Head of Sustainability at Nokia, on the collaboration: “Through our subsea fiber optic networks, innovations such as acoustic sensor technology, remote environmental monitoring or private wireless, Nokia can – and will – continue to play a significant role in the marine environment. We are proud to support and collaborate with The Ocean Cleanup, and look forward to seeing how our technology can truly drive sustainable change and help protect critical natural resources and habitats.

Stephan Litjens, Vice President Enterprise Campus Edge Solutions at Nokia, on the collaboration: “At Nokia, we believe that there is no green without digital, and that our products and solutions are the way we make our greatest positive impact on people’s lives and the planet. This project is a great example of that. Our Nokia DAC private wireless network and Nokia MXIE edge computing system will provide reliable, cost-effective voice and data communications between the two vessels involved in the cleanup operation. With secure coverage in the open sea that also enables video and analytics, this solution enhances worker safety and provides high visibility and reconnaissance of the cleanup areas.

About The Ocean Cleanup

The Ocean Cleanup is an international non-profit project that develops and scales up technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. They want to achieve this goal through a two-pronged approach: damming the inflow via rivers and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.

For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup is developing large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate and periodically remove the plastic. This plastic is tracked and traced via DNV’s chain of custody model to certify its origin when recycled into new products. To turn off the tap in rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed a portfolio of Interceptor™ solutions to intercept and remove river plastic before it reaches the ocean.

The Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat and now employs a broad multidisciplinary team of approximately 140 people. The foundation is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
