MCS has had a high-profile visitor – 70 cm tall to be exact! Robot dog Spot came to sniff our mobile 5G kit in our Rotterdam office.
Later this year, this mobile 5G unit will be deployed to make Spot 5G-proof.
Giving high-tech support to MCS engineers
Startup incubator YES!Delft is the owner of this robot dog from Boston Dynamics. With them, Spot has a promising future ahead of him. Together with the Do IoT Field Lab (TU Delft) will test the possibilities of a 5G connection for Spot. We will support them with our (Private) 5G knowledge with this upgrade from 4G to 5G.
In Rotterdam, Spot already came to give a paw to the MCS engineers who will soon be responsible for the 5G upgrade. He also immediately did a short inspection round on the parking lot.
Low latency 5G offers opportunities for Spot
Spot's current connection works via a 4G router. For this test, we replaced the 4G router with an Oppo 5G CPe 1a. Later, we will also have a 5G router at Spot Teltonika RUTX50 to test.
Low latency is crucial for Spot. That is why the latency capabilities of the robot dog are extensively tested with 5G. Spot can collect real-time data in remote locations and navigate quickly across a terrain. This allows him to record data safely and accurately.
Currently, the research is being conducted on the 5G SA network at The Green Village, a location of the TU Delft. This 5G radio network with a 5G edge core is very suitable for testing with the lowest possible latency.
Mobile 5G kit for testing at desired location
At a later time, we will repeat the tests at MCS on location with our mobile 5G kit. This is a mobile unit with a Nokia NDAC 5G SA network. The kit is used for the Do IoT Fieldlab for 5G research on location and thus makes it possible to directly test 5G in the intended environment.
5G-proof ATEX robot passes all tests
Spot is not the first robot that we have made 5G-proof within the Do IoT Fieldlab. robot from ExRobotics has also undergone the upgrade and passed all tests successfully. This ATEX robot can perform research under the most extreme conditions in places that are too dangerous for people. Think for example of leaks in the oil and gas industry.
Collaboration with special robot
After this visit, Spot went back to his basket at YES!Delft. Our MCS'ers are really looking forward to working with this special robot dog this year!
