The exhibitors of the Design Automation & Embedded Systems event (D&E) are organizing this year for the first time live demonstrations and workshops in addition to the technical lecture program. The demos will take place all day on the exhibition floor and are intended to bring innovations to the attention of visitors and other interested parties in an accessible way. They can get started with new products in a practical way and see for themselves how it works. The D&E event is on Wednesday April 19 in Congrescentrum 1931 in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Plenary speakers Ruud van Beek and Dick van Hees from ASML update visitors on an important topic within the sector: early involvement. They try to answer the question: how do you design a product in such a way that it is good right away (right first time). You do this, among other things, by talking to all parties in the manufacturing chain at the beginning of the design process. By communicating with the producer early on about the wishes and specifications, and incorporating this feedback during the design, you prevent a design from being rejected at a later stage.

In practice, it is not always easy to distil quality requirements from the client's objectives. Also, the coordination of expectations between the designer and the producer does not always go smoothly. During their lecture, Hees and Van Beek provide practical tips and advice to improve and ease this coordination process between parties.

The third plenary speaker, Geert Willems, will speak on behalf of imec about the impact of electronics on the environment. Companies want to minimize the impact of electronic components, but do not always know how to do this. During his presentation, Willems will discuss the lean ecodesign-methodology, based on the Life Cycle Inventory analysis (LCI). This concept was previously developed and applied in the Green eSpace project, part of ESA's Clean Space program. Green eSpace aimed to reduce the environmental impact of electronics in space applications. Willems will examine together with the audience whether lean ecodesign also has broader applicability in the electronics sector.
