Nutrition has been a hot topic for years. New technologies help in the lab to analyze food better and faster. During the seminar Trending Topics in Food & Beverage On Thursday 4 October, various analysis techniques will be discussed by speakers from DSM, RIKILT and Nofalab, among others. Xpedition, which is connected to this seminar, provides information on current topics such as NMR analyzers, SPE, pathogen detection and NIR spectroscopy by means of a tour along 6 participating companies.

For many years, direct analysis of glyphosate and other ionic herbicides such as glufosinate, chlorate, fosetyl, ethephone, chlorate, bromide and maleic anhydride and their metabolites in one LCMS analysis was hardly possible. Ultimately, 3 or 4 methods are needed to perform the measurements. Wim Broer from Nofalab presents a method that shows that all of these herbicides are done in one 15 minute LCMS method.

Sebastian Säger from Laboratory Lommatzsch & Säger will discuss the analysis of mineral oils and synthetic hydrocarbons by HPLC-GC and GCxGC. The contamination of food with different types of hydrocarbons is an ongoing issue. This presentation will provide a better view on the limits and advantages of the routine method for MOSH/MOAH. Furthermore, a multi-step approach will be proposed to differentiate mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbons by GCxGC-MS.

Nanomaterials are increasingly used in food as additives and food contact materials. Analytical techniques are being developed to detect and characterize nanomaterials in food. In addition to the detection of nanoparticles, it is also important to obtain information about the composition and status of the nanomaterial in a sample. It has become clear that these questions cannot be answered with a single analytical method, multiple methods or coupled techniques are required to answer such questions. Ruud Peters from RIKILT discusses some of these advanced analytical techniques and shows some applications.

The other speakers of the seminar are Erwin Kaal from DSM Biotechnology Center and Niels Martha from TLR International Laboratories. View here the entire program. The seminar will take place on Thursday, October 4 between 9:00 and 12:00 and will follow on from the X-pedition Trending Topics in Food & Beverage. This tour of 6 companies offers more information about innovative analysis techniques around food using interactive demos. Participating companies are JSB, Beckman Coulter, PerkinElmer, Merck, Gilson and Salm and Kipp.

Registration for the seminar and/or the X-pedition is free and can be done via this link.
