The ODU MINI-SNAP® Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) connector enables Ethernet connections via copper cables with a single twisted pair and runs the power supply to end devices via PoDL – Power over Data Line. The simpler design of this new generation of connectors and the associated weight and space savings are a solution for designers and developers on several fronts.

SPE standards and usage:

  • 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bp)
  • 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bw)
  • 10BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3cq)

The maximum bridging distances of these SPE standards vary between 15.40 and 1000 meters. SPE is currently being implemented in new automotive applications, replacing CAN and other bus systems. In the future, communications, controls and security functions will be managed uniformly over Ethernet. Industrial automation would also like to benefit from this because SPE enables an unobstructed connection of devices, sensor and actuator technology and much more.

The ODU MINI-SNAP® series L / K and the ODU-MAC® series connectors are suitable for SPE. The properties summarized:

  • Limits for unshielded cables according to OPEN ALLIANCE
  • Limits for shielded cables according to IEC 63171-6
  • 1 Gbps up to 15 m
  • Up to IP68
  • 5,000 mating cycles
  • Push-Pull locking
  • Cable assembly: different lengths and overmolded variants
