The requirements within the food industry in terms of hygiene, product quality and traceability are very high. At the same time, there is increasing demand for flexibility and sustainability. In the seminar 'Process optimization in Food & Beverage' on Thursday, September 29, various technical solutions will be discussed, with attention to the specific requirements of this sector.

For example, Thijs van Delft from IMD BV discusses the benefits of in-line measuring techniques and data analysis in relation to wastewater flows.

IMD BV specializes in monitoring the quantity and composition of wastewater steams. In this way, they help companies not only to comply with the legally prescribed discharge conditions, but also to reduce raw material losses in the production process.

In response to a specific request from a customer, IMD has developed a measuring system together with Elscolab that provides inline insight into a stream that can contain protein and sugar in varying composition. This uses a combination of UVVIS and Brix sensors (or refractometry) and a self-developed data tool. In his presentation, Thijs van Delft shows how this solution can be used to detect deviations in the wastewater in a timely manner. This results in process optimization and a controlled situation at the discharge point.

Rolf Wolthuis of Endress + Hauser also addresses the demand for more advanced in-line analysis techniques. Processes in the food and beverage industry are becoming increasingly complex with greater use of biotechnology. This places higher demands on the instrumentation used. Raman spectroscopy is one of those advanced analytical instruments.

Raman spectroscopy, while not uncommon in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, is a relative newcomer to the food and beverage industry. With a number of concrete examples, Rolf Wolthuis shows the possibilities of this analysis technology.
