One of our relations has developed a machine that uses high temperatures and vacuum in the production process.
However, in vacuum, spark transfer can occur between the heating elements. The solution is to reduce the operating voltage of these elements with transformers. However, when a transformer is switched on, short and high inrush currents occur that amount to 10-12x nominal I. This requires larger contactors, thicker cables and circuit breakers with a slower characteristic. This results in higher installation costs. Vierpole was asked how these high switch-on peaks can be limited.
Vierpool's solution is a 3-phase controlled soft starter from IC Electronic to switch on the transformer. Vacuum soldering techniques are used in the production of these soft starters. This allows the heat built up in the semiconductor to flow optimally to the heat sink. In addition, the semiconductor is constructed according to a bridge construction, so that there are sufficient possibilities of movement and a very high short-circuit resistance is achieved. The soft starter has options to regulate the starting time and torque, which avoids high switch-on peaks. The result is a simple and smart solution without adjustments to the circuit breaker and cabling.
