An 11-meter-high bust of Franz Kafka has been placed by artist David Cerny at the Quadrio shopping center in Prague. This 39,000-kilo artwork is set in motion by 42 servomotors. Between the servomotor and the disk is of course a low-play reducer from Apex Dynamics, namely the AB115M1-060. In this article we discuss Kafka, the origins of the artwork, and the technical challenge behind it.

Low backlash reducer from Apex Dynamics: Efficient and rustproof

The individual discs are driven by servo technology and the choice for the gearboxes fell on the AB115M1-060 from Apex Dynamics for the following reasons:

  • Stainless steel output shaft and housing provide major benefits in this outdoor application.
  • The helical teeth ensure quiet and low-vibration properties.
  • High efficiency – low loss.
  • High temperature range.
  • Local support and service.
  • Fast response and delivery time.
