My personal history with Theo Poulissen goes back to 1996. A number of technical companies were working on an association for the data communication standard Profibus. For that, the board (in formation I think) came to the Sector Technology of the Hague University of Applied Sciences, to place the secretariat there.

I had just started working as a project manager at the University. The parties had a good conversation and Theo congratulated me on this project.

On June 2, 2023, FHI received the sad news that Theo Poulissen passed away in Gouda. It was a shocking message, because he had been in contact with us shortly after his retirement to set up a knowledge center.

The first experience with Theo shows his warm and practical character as far as I am concerned. He was a connector and a technical expert who works hard on solutions. The secretariat was not awarded to the University, because my direct manager thought that this association could pay something. That's how it goes in life, if you assume something: it is not always true.

In 2002 our paths crossed again, because the secretariat did end up at FHI. Theo showed great drive for both Saia-Burgess and later Honeywell. I have experienced him at trade fairs, meetings and events. A man with passion and expertise also ensured the flourishing of the Profibus association.

In the years that followed, Profibus developed into PI Nederland. Theo is honorary chairman of this association. After his time as chairman, the members and those involved recognized that he (together with them of course) had given a decisive direction. Even now, this strong group of companies is still well put together, to inform and fascinate technicians in the Benelux with communication, safety and standardization.

His professional and connecting qualities are based on his warm personality. When you started talking to him, not only the tone, but also the entire content of his conversation was focused on understanding, interest, connection and possibilities for the future.

He leaves us with this example for technical sectors and man in general.
