Ball Screws Provide Maximum Load Capacity and Longer Life in a Compact Design

Thomson Industries, Inc. has introduced a ball screw that has more than 2 times the loading capacity of a standard ball screw. The new ballscrews can handle more than double the capacity, or deliver 10 times the service life compared to the standard ballscrews but with the same performance points. In addition to the updated ball screws, they still offer the distinctive German-designed precision, high reliability and high strength. Heavy duty ball screws are ideal for demanding motion control applications such as injection molding, pressing and large manufacturing equipment.

By increasing the ball size and optimizing the ball trajectory, Thomson now offers a ball screw that has more than twice the capacity of a comparable standard ball screw. Because roller screws have a nut that is nearly 50% larger and 150% the price of a comparable heavy-duty ball screw, motion control system designers now have an attractive opportunity to reduce costs and improve performance.

Thomson's heavy duty ball screws require replacement less often, significantly reducing maintenance costs. This offers an ideal opportunity to replace roller screws or hydraulic systems where the shafts require accuracy, safe movement of heavy loads, long and reliable service life and a minimum of maintenance.

Examples of applications for which the new ball screw would be ideal:

  • Large manufacturing equipment, including mills, water jets, plasma cutters, automatic welding machines, which control movement on the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • Die casting and metal fabrication, where ball screws can handle heavy loads at a short stroke and with high precision.
  • Metal pressing and forming applications, including presses for making rivets, servo press systems, tube bending machines, plate bending machines, test setups and straightening machines.
  • A wide range of other applications, including machine tools, lifters, large valves, and high-load actuators.

Thomson's heavy duty ball screws are available in lengths up to 15m and with single or double nuts. They come in standard sizes up to 160mm in diameter, with a dynamic load capacity of up to 1,440kN. Preload options are available upon request and Thomson will customize the ball screw to suit customer specific applications. They provide smooth, quiet movement at high speeds over a long service life. The pitch accuracy is up to 12 µm/300 mm.
