Tin, flux and of course a soldering iron: soldering, which was practiced in Mesopotamia five thousand years ago, is inextricably linked to the electronics market. During the day E&A soldering is even a top sport: professionals compete among themselves in the hope of becoming the best solderer in the Benelux.

Han Raetsen of Cobar Europe BV, sponsor of the soldering competition, has a lot of experience with soldering competitions. Together with trade organization IPC, Raetsen has set up international championships in Russia, among others, for two years in a row. He had the role of MIT, or Master IPC Trainer.

During these soldering competitions, the same soldering assignment is carried out by the participants at different workplaces - depending on the number of participants.

Raetsen explains how he can recognize a good solderer: “Firstly: the manufactured products must work, for example that a number of LEDs light up. It is also important that a solder uses the right tools and the correct settings of the soldering equipment. In addition, it is worth using the correct methods for soldering, no transfer soldering for example.”

He is looking forward to the E&A soldering competition, a competition in which participants can win great prizes. Raetsen: “Because this is the first time for FHI, it is difficult to predict how these competitions will go. However, at other fairs it is often a success because something is actually produced.
