Hyperspectral Imaging: Making the Invisible Visible in Food

Foreign body food recalls can be financially and reputationally damaging to a company. Traditional inspection methods often fall short, especially when it comes to detecting transparent or colored contaminants deep within products. Hyperspectral imaging offers an innovative solution.

How does it work?

Using the Headwall MV.C NIR hyperspectral camera, in combination with the perClass Mira Stage and perClass Mira Software, we can analyse the entire light spectrum reflected by a product. Every material, from cheese to meat, has a unique 'spectral fingerprint'. Even small particles of plastic or metal also have a unique spectral signature that is recognised by the MV.C NIR camera.

The perClass Mira Stage serves as a platform for the product, while the perClass Mira Software analyses and visualizes the complex spectral data. This combination enables high-precision detection of foreign bodies in food.

Advantages of hyperspectral imaging:

  • High detection accuracy: Detect even the smallest foreign objects, regardless of color or material.
  • Quick inspection: Analyze products in real time during the production line.
  • Non-destructive: Does not damage products during inspection.
  • Increased food safety: Protect consumers and prevent recalls.
  • Enhanced brand protection: Build trust with consumers.

Case study: Cheese

In a study, the Headwall MV.C NIR camera was used in combination with the perClass Mira Stage and perClass Mira Software to detect plastic particles in cheese. The results were impressive: all foreign bodies were successfully detected without false positives.
