Fat bikes are extremely popular, especially among young people. Fat bikes are electric bicycles with very thick tires. Unfortunately, they can also be a danger on the road. By tuning these bikes, it is possible to go faster than the permitted 25 km per hour and wearing a helmet is not mandatory in the Netherlands. This can lead to an increase in serious traffic accidents.

Dynostar is a Dutch company that specializes in the development and production of innovative and approved power dynamometers. A dynamometer is a device that allows a vehicle to rotate its wheels on rollers instead of on the road when stationary. This device is used by the police, among others, to determine the maximum speed that a vehicle can reach. Dynostar has been supplying dynamometers to the Dutch police for about 20 years. A new dynamometer was recently developed, on which, in addition to the speed of mopeds and scooters, the speed of e-bikes and speed pedelecs can also be measured.

These new devices have recently been put into use by the Dutch police. They are very satisfied with the operation and all police units in the Netherlands now have a Dynostar roller bench. This development has now received international and even intercontinental interest!

The dynamometer must meet the highest requirements to ensure reliable measurements. By working together with Zemic Europe, experts in load cell technology, Dynostar can integrate high-quality weighing components into their products. This partnership guarantees reliability, safety and precision in their dynamometer systems. At Zemic, we are pleased that we can contribute to better road safety with our load cells in the new dynamometer.

How Zemic Europe advised Dynostar

Dynostar and Zemic Europe have worked closely together to meet the challenges of measuring the speed of modern vehicles. By combining their expertise, they have developed solutions that deliver accurate speed measurements and are tailored to the needs of law enforcement and other customers.

Dynostar explained the exact needs regarding the weighing function of the dynamometer. Zemic supplied a sensor with a specific cable length, which met the customer's specifications.

In order to measure the speed accurately, someone needs to sit on the bike. The pressure exerted affects the speed to be measured. With Zemic load cells this can be determined very accurately.

Which Zemic force transducer is most suitable?

Our S-type load cell H3 is best suited for this application. Dynostar preferred a shorter cable, so we developed a modified version of the H3. This load cell is integrated into the Dynostar dynamometer. The shorter cable improved the ease of installation on the dynamometer.

This load cell has the following features:

  • Nickel plated alloy steel IP67 “S” type load cell
  • Tensile and compression applications
  • Suitable for hanging, funnel and other weighing equipment
  • Also available in Imperial capacities and sizes
  • The capacities 100kg – 2.5t have OIML approval

Zemic has a specially equipped sensor department, where 325 engineers are continuously working on designing, sampling and producing custom made force transducers and strain gauge solutions. We love the challenge of developing the best weighing solution for each project.
