With Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation, a flood of data is available in the manufacturing industry. However, 90% of this data is not used today. Why not and how can this change? What is the role of PROFINET, OPC UA and TSN in this transformation? In what way is industrial communication now future-proof? How can data be converted into structured and useful information?
Communication from sensor to cloud is already possible today, with IO-Link as a widespread protocol at sensor level and PROFINET as the Industrial Ethernet backbone. With OPC UA as an interface for IT applications, many standards are ready for use. When the Industry 4.0 project started with many committed companies, the many different dimensions quickly became clear. On the one hand, PI had to address the entire spectrum of industrial communication technology, but timely implementation can only take place with measures based on existing technology. Due to the enormous size of this spectrum, this can only be done in close cooperation with other organizations. Much progress has already been made and more in the area of PROFINET and Industry 4.0 applications will follow soon. PI has set itself the goal of making Industry 4.0 a reality and easy to implement.
