IO-LINK is a point-to-point interface for the low-cost connection of smart/intelligent devices that serve the lowest level of automation. Devices at this level were once strictly 'on/off' types, but are increasingly offering higher performance capabilities such as on-the-fly configuration, higher resolutions and improved operability.

They have greater processing power and require faster and more intelligent communication with controller devices. IO-LINK meets this need with a flexible solution that is fieldbus independent. IO-LINK is flexible because it is designed to work with traditional devices without modification, so installing an IO-LINK network is extremely simple. Existing sensor networks can also be easily upgraded to integrate the newer device types.

In recent years, IO-Link has also experienced tremendous growth. In 2021, 6.3 million devices were shipped – the highest number of all years to date. Even in difficult times, IO-Link was able to achieve a growth rate of around 30%, proving that the technology is firmly anchored in the applications. The total installed base of IO-Link devices now stands at over 27.3 million.

Companies particularly value the simple installation and parameter assignment of IO-Link and its fieldbus neutrality. That is why IO-Link is implemented in all fieldbus systems available on the market. This also applies to almost every well-known PLC manufacturer. The fieldbus-independent IO-Link standard is therefore the ideal solution for many companies, enabling them to connect products to different systems and controllers worldwide.
