PROFIBUS is standardized in IEC 61158 – this lays the foundation for interoperability and compatibility. In addition, the PROFIBUS PA profile enables smooth cooperation of process devices on the bus. The current PROFIBUS PA version V3.02 contains many functions that make the use of field devices even easier, for example when replacing the device.

When a field device is replaced, the new device automatically takes over the role of the previous device – so a device replacement can be carried out easily and without interrupting system operation.
This automatic adjustment is also possible with devices of different generations.

Standardization therefore offers more flexibility and no restriction in the choice of supplier. Because there is now a large choice of devices that can be combined almost arbitrarily. A focus on only one manufacturer is no longer a given.
It is also possible to replace devices at a later date without any problems, and new devices are always backwards compatible with PROFIBUS.

Uniform and application-oriented

PROFIBUS is the fieldbus-based automation standard from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). PROFIBUS connects controllers or control systems with decentralized field devices (sensors and actuators) at field level via a single bus cable and also enables continuous data exchange with higher-level communication systems. The consistency of PROFIBUS is made possible by the use of a single, standardized and application-independent communication protocol (PROFIBUS DP), which supports fieldbus solutions in production and process automation, but also in motion control and safety-related tasks.

PROFIBUS has a modular structure with the communication protocol as the core component. This is combined with application-specific modules for transmission, calibration (“application profiles”) and engineering to create complete PROFIBUS solutions for specific market segments (industries).

In order to ensure the correct interaction of the numerous devices of an automation solution, the basic functions and services of the device must be compatible with each other in terms of communication, functionality and industry solutions. This consistency is achieved by “application profiles” that refer to device families or special industry requirements, e.g. process automation (PA Devices), motion control (PROFIdrive) or integration of HART devices (HART on PROFIBUS).

The added value of PROFIBUS

…is high and enables cost reduction and operational improvement throughout the entire lifecycle of an asset. This is achieved in a number of ways:

  • In the engineering phase, it simplifies the installation design, eliminates the need for hard wiring and requires less hardware, resulting in faster commissioning and lower costs.
  • It also enables better diagnostics, which speeds up commissioning.
  • By providing better and more timely data to operational and management personnel, increased productivity and improved product quality are achieved.
  • It supports advanced asset management strategies that enable better management and maintenance of assets and equipment.
