In a large industrial installation, a significantly increased failure rate of DC power supplies was observed during normal operation — despite redundancy, standard compliance, and no obvious pattern in where failures occurred. Simply replacing units reduced availability risks, but did not address the underlying cause.
In this presentation, Christoph Klie will show how shifting the focus from individual components to the electrical environment as a system revealed the real drivers behind these failures. By combining live, high-frequency measurements on an operating installation with targeted laboratory investigations, hidden interactions between earthing concepts, electrical noise, and transient events became visible for the first time.
Christoph demonstrates how system-level electrical behavior can silently degrade power electronics over time, and how impedance- and noise-based analysis enables failures to be detected, understood, and prevented before they impact operations.
