Tuesday September 24 10:00 – 11:30

Location: Croese room

How safely do you work? That is the question we hope you can answer after the seminar and the X-pedition. Are you working as safely as you thought or is there room for improvement?
Three experts talk from their field about how you can improve safety in the lab. During this seminar it becomes clear why it is so important to work safely in the laboratory and what risks are involved.

Exposure to hazardous substances, what do you do about it?

Many hazardous substances are used in laboratories. Of course, everyone wants the lowest possible exposure to hazardous substances and that is why most labs have many measures in place to reduce or prevent exposure. However, we always continue to critically examine whether all risks have already been covered. Can and should we do more? What if situations change? During her lecture, Lonneke will give a specific example from practice; from inventorying exposure to eliminating or reducing it where possible.

The invisible risk of noise in the laboratory

Exposure to excessively loud or annoying noise in the laboratory can lead to hearing damage or complaints. In addition to the legal noise standards from the Working Conditions Decree, high and low frequency sounds also play an important role. Not everyone is equally sensitive to high and low frequency sounds, which can lead to misunderstandings and dangers. In this lecture, you will be made aware of invisible risks of noise sources that you can encounter in the laboratory. Examples are also given of how you can prevent harmful and annoying noise so that you can work safely and healthily.

GUIDE: Behavioral Intervention Do it yourself tool Substances

The Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E) has been carried out, measures have been taken to protect employees and yet you still see that there are employees who are unnecessarily exposed to hazardous substances. There is a good chance that personal behavior of employees plays a role here.

This situation was recognized by all participants (20) in the behavioral intervention workshop during the symposium of the Dutch Association of Occupational Hygienists (NVvA) in 2022. It was also agreed that there was a need for a supporting tool with which measures can be found to adjust this behavior and thus reduce the exposure of these employees. As a follow-up to the workshop, we started working with a group of 10 occupational hygienists in co-creation and based on the design thinking method to further shape our tool (GIDS - Behavioral Intervention Do-it-yourself tool Substances) together. And we are proud of the result!

During this presentation, Jody will introduce you to the interactive prototype for the tool. We are curious whether you think that GIDS indeed offers the extra handle to be able to work healthily. We can use your input for further developments within our program.
