The research group SmartLab systems at the Institute of Natural Materials Technology at Technische Universität Dresden focuses on development projects in the areas Internet of Things (IoT), sensor technology and automation in the laboratory environment and generally in the field of biotechnology.

Digitalization, miniaturization and automation are, in our understanding, the three main keywords to characterize the smart lab of the future. Key research aspects are the next generation of autonomous mobile sensor systems as well as addressing problems in the field of laboratory automation. A special interest covers computer vision of biological samples grown on Petri dishes, their handling and automatic manipulation.
