Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) is transforming process automation by bringing seamless Ethernet connectivity directly into hazardous areas and field-level devices.

This session introduces the fundamental concepts behind Ethernet-APL, including its physical layer characteristics, intrinsic safety approach, and integration into existing Ethernet-based architectures.

Participants will gain an understanding of how Ethernet-APL overcomes traditional limitations of fieldbus technologies, enabling high-speed, long-distance communication while supporting power and data over a single pair of wires.

The lecture also outlines typical network topologies, key components such as APL switches, and how Ethernet-APL supports digitalization initiatives like asset diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and seamless IT/OT integration.
