Ethernet APL in practice: The APL Experience Plant

Commissioned by the WIB, Errakal and Ebert HERA have started construction of a setup on which Ethernet-APL instrumentation from various suppliers can be mounted. The setup is equipped with an electric motor and centrifugal pump to circulate demineralized water, with the aim of gaining practical experience with the operation and application of Ethernet-APL.

During this project, the following questions, among others, were investigated:

  • What is the procedure for exchanging APL instruments?
  • How does a 'brown-out' work in APL, and does this phenomenon occur?
  • How do you set up a control loop with APL?
  • How do you build an APL network?
  • How do you capture NAMUR notifications from APL instrumentation?

These issues have been translated into practical tests, which were subsequently carried out. The knowledge gained has been incorporated into a report, the first draft of which is currently available.
