The importance of standards in laboratory design and use

As the knowledge platform in the field of contamination control and product cleanliness, VCCN is organizing a mini-symposium on Wednesday, September 24, with the theme Standards in a Laboratory EnvironmentThis mini-symposium is part of the LabNL program.

This seminar focuses on the importance of standards in laboratories. Three speakers will each address the topic from a different perspective, providing valuable insights for anyone involved in the design, construction, or operation of laboratories.

Program content
During the mini-symposium, three speakers will highlight the importance of standards and guidelines for contamination control in laboratory environments:

  • Jeroen Pieterse and Robert van Seters(NEN) explains their work in standardization. What is the purpose of standards, how are they developed, and why are they essential in laboratory environments?
  • Frans Godthelp (Lab-Dsign) explains the importance of standards during the design phase of a laboratory. How do standards ensure a safe, efficient, and sustainable design?
  • Peter van Assenbergh shares practical experiences and demonstrates how standards contribute to safety, efficiency and quality in a working laboratory environment.

Standardization, development and use of standards – Jeroen Pieterse and Robert van Seters, NEN

During this lecture, Jeroen Pieterse will introduce you to the work of the NEN committee "Laboratory Installations, Furnishings, and Ventilation." He will demonstrate how members can effectively share their knowledge and influence new standards. Jeroen has worked at NEN for 24 years, 10 of which as secretary of the committee. In this role, he brings market participants together, ensures a smooth exchange of information, and initiates consultations. He also represents the committee at European and international meetings.

Program of Requirements from a user perspective – Frans Godthelp, Lab-Dsign

Ask a user to document their requirements for lab space, and you'll often receive a list focused on square meters. While a user knows a lot, developing a sound program of requirements requires more than just that knowledge. The user is essential for providing input to a lab consultant who speaks the same language and can translate this input into functional requirements. Furthermore, it's crucial to create a comprehensive picture, in which relationships and logistics are a key component of the program of requirements.

Frans is a director and consultant at Lab-Dsign. He specializes in the design of laboratories and cleanrooms, a field he has been active in for over 25 years. He was co-owner and founder of Dr. Heinekamp Benelux BV 14 years ago, and as of January 1st, this name was changed to Lab-Dsign. Lab-Dsign's activities include drafting specifications, design, and implementation supervision. Knowledge and expertise regarding user requirements and translating these into installation- and building-specific requirements are also part of the business.
