Performing a 'full system recovery' can be quite challenging in industrial environments. Telerex therefore offers the InnoOSR flash disks from Innodisk within its product portfolio. Full recovery is now just a matter of 'pushing a button'.
A crashed operating system or application program can cause major problems in a production environment and jeopardize the continuity of business-critical processes. In many cases, these failures are difficult to resolve. “If a controller in a conveyor belt system, for example, shows problems on the other side of the world, an engineer has to get on a plane to reset the OS or application program to the default settings,” says Peter Philips, Product Manager Embedded Systems at Telerex. “Control-alt-delete or pressing the on/off button a few times does not work in a production environment.”
The InnoOSR offers a possibility for On-Site Recovery, because the system is connected with a physical button.
How does that work?
Michael Touw, Sales Manager at Innodisk, explains this. “The operating system and the necessary programs are installed on the first partition of the disk. With a special management program from Innodisk, you then indicate that a backup must be made to a 'hidden' partition that is not visible.” The button – which is connected to a header pin on the disk via wires – comes in handy in the event of a malfunction. “For example, by pressing the button for five seconds, the backup from the hidden partition is placed on the active partition. The LED light on the button shows when this process is complete. After a reset, the system then restarts with the default settings. This works under both Windows and Linux.”
