A revolutionary automated inoculation device for microbiology.
WASP – a fully automated workstation for labelling and inoculating microbiological samples. All microbiological samples can be manipulated by the WASP: faeces, sputum, urine, wound swabs, …
Liquid samples such as urine and feces, transported in a “CARY-BLAIR” liquid medium, can be randomly inoculated in combination with the eSwab.
Copan's unique eSwab automatically and spontaneously distributes the swab contents into the liquid medium, making inoculation as easy as urine. In other words, no more need to roll the swab over the plate.

One device processes all swabs, urine and feces samples.
- Extremely flexible and efficient: 180 urines per hour (when using 2-compartment Petri dishes), 180 nose and throat swabs per hour and 45 wound swabs per hour (e.g. 4 dishes with 4 dilution inoculations).
- A complete “Walk Away” system: automatic decapping, grafting and recapping in just a few seconds.
- Minimal presence of a lab technician. It takes about 20 minutes before the device needs to be refilled with new samples, for example.
- Switch the unit to the “Streak only” method and the WASP will automatically inoculate all subcultures such as Rappaport Salmonella, Selenite and any enriched media such as MRSA's or BMS's.

- 9 Petri plate holders with random access provide total flexibility, i.e. up to 9 different culture plates can be set up.
- Extremely suitable for both simple and complex vaccinations in a jiffy. Ranging from throat swabs, urines, MRSA screenings to fecal and wound swabs.
- The software package allows you to choose from a library of grafting patterns or if you prefer you can design your own grafting pattern that meets your requirements.
- Can be fully connected to the LIS or can function as a completely independent device.
- Inoculates your entire steel range, but can be converted with one simple touch of the screen to a “STREAK ONLY” method allowing the different subcultures (Salmonella, Selenite, …) to be inoculated.
Gram preparation module
The automated Gram Slide Prep™ is designed to prepare a Gram slide, including permanent inkjet labeling of slides prior to Gram staining. The Gram Slide Prep™ represents an even greater advancement in sample processing automation. The WASP is the only instrument in its class to offer such comprehensive and automated solutions.
Broth inoculation module
The WASP inoculates instrument-ready enrichment “Broths” such as LIM and Selenite, which are part of the Copan LBM line. After inoculation, the flexible barcode labeling arm adjusts and moves from its horizontal position to its vertical position. In this way, the barcode label is placed on the side of the Broth tube.
