Rockwell Automation in new CIP kitchen Mead Johnson Nijmegen

At Mead Johnson Nijmegen, which makes infants and baby food, a new (Cleaning in Place) CIP kitchen has been installed in combination with a new control solution. System integrator Actemium and Milkron, which designed the CIP process here, worked closely with Rockwell Automation.

The factory's existing infrastructure was at the end of its life and some components were outdated. Mead Johnson Nijmegen wanted to replace it with a contemporary solution. Milkron, element of Krones AG , from Germany, designed the new CIP process according to the client's requirements, taking into account that these process installations had to be seamlessly integrated into the existing production process. The factory produces super-premium infant formula for the Chinese region, the largest market in the world. As with all foods, cleanliness and hygiene are paramount, so cleaning guidelines are incredibly strict.

Tackling aging
Mead Johnson's Dutch factory is deploying a new CIP kitchen and control solution to replace outdated legacy hardware and software. Scalable integrated architecture makes the system future-proof. Apart from the delivery of the control solution, it was Rockwell Automation responsible for hardware engineering, electrical diagrams, supply of control panels and preparation of Functional Design Software (FDS), followed by testing, commissioning and aftercare.
Levi Pattiasina, project manager at Mead Johnson Nijmegen: “Our primary assignment was to tackle aging. Some minor performance improvements have been achieved, but the aim was to ensure that our installations were fit for the future. All engineering teams worked well together and we received great support from Milkron and Actemium, from the expert team of engineers. We are very satisfied with the new installation.

Standard on Rockwell Automation
Pierre Teszner, regional sales vice president Central Europe at Rockwell Automation: “Cleaning procedures – especially those in infant food – must be very carefully monitored, recorded and analyzed. This kind of attention to detail can only truly be achieved with tightly integrated automation systems powered by a robust software solution. The company and this factory work natively with Rockwell Automation, so seamless integration with other systems was no problem.”

Special attention to hygiene
Actemium, part of Vinci and a gold-level System Integrator in the Rockwell Automation PartnerNetwork in the Netherlands, worked closely and effectively with Rockwell Automation to achieve the desired results. Adriaan van de Ven, customer manager at Actemium, explains: “Any environment where food is used receives special attention in terms of hygiene, so the CIP installation we design and commission must have specialized mechanical features and operational functionalities , including the application of advanced operating systems. In this case, there was also the need for minimal disruption, which was addressed by our deployment of pre-validated library code, which significantly accelerated design, installation, commissioning and integration.”

Available downtime limited
Olaf Drewelowsky, international sales manager of Milkron, adds: “From planning to installation and handover, the focus throughout the project was to transform the old CIP into a new CIP according to the latest standards and requirements, with a familiar 'look & feel' for the operators. Another major challenge was the limited downtime available for the transition to the new CIP system. But all this was possible thanks to the good teamwork of all parties involved and the extensive preparations prior to the switchover and recommissioning.”
