Take control of rack capacity and PDU costs with centralized energy management
Schleifenbauer PDU 5.0 with a Gateway Module and EnerTree Platform brings power distribution, measurement data and centralized PDU management together in one architecture. Electrical distribution, metering and optional switching remain in the PDU. The Gateway provides communication with EnerTree Platform: Data Center Energy Management software running as a virtual machine within your own infrastructure.
For operators, this means shared connectivity, centralized energy management and included DCEM software with no recurring software license fees. It is an architecture worth comparing before you finalize your next PDU specification.
Why the architecture behind an intelligent PDU matters
A rack PDU must suit the equipment connected to it. The management architecture also determines how much network infrastructure is required, how configurations are deployed and where historical data is available.
Across tens or hundreds of PDUs, these decisions add up. Individual web interfaces can be useful for local access, but they do not automatically provide a central environment for rack views, reporting and management. That requires an additional platform or integration.
Schleifenbauer allows you to specify the electrical functionality and management approach separately. Choose the metering and switching you need, then select the communication architecture that suits the installation. This aligns management with the electrical functions your project actually requires.
How the PDU Gateway and EnerTree Platform work together
The architecture has three elements, each with its own role.
The PDU distributes measures and switches where required
The PDU contains the electrical distribution and selected metering and switching hardware. Depending on the configuration, measurements are available at input, phase, branch or outlet level. Remote switching requires a switchable model.
A Metered PDU, Monitored PDU, Switched PDU and Managed PDU therefore provide different functions. A Managed PDU combines input metering, outlet metering and outlet switching. EnerTree presents and manages the functions supported by the connected hardware.
The Gateway connects the installation to the platform
An active Gateway connects a Databus group to EnerTree Platform through the customer's network. In a supported topology, up to 100 PDUs can be accessed through one IP address: the PDU with the active Gateway and up to 99 downstream PDUs.
Downstream PDUs do not have to use dedicated Daisy Chain Modules. Gateway Modules configured in Daisy Chain mode can also perform this role. Both module types can be combined within the group.
The dedicated Daisy Chain Module has a simpler hardware configuration, offers a modest price advantage and has no Ethernet port. A Gateway Module configured in Daisy Chain mode retains its physical interfaces. The right choice depends on the hardware requirements, network design and intended future use.
EnerTree Platform provides centralized energy management
EnerTree Platform brings the connected installation into one environment for monitoring, analysis, configuration and reporting. It supports up to 10,000 PDUs per instance.
As the platform runs as a virtual machine, storage and processing are provided within the customer's server environment. Resources can be sized around the installation and data retention requirements. Actual requirements depend on factors including the number of measurement points and devices, reporting workloads and concurrent use.
Where the Gateway and EnerTree cost advantage comes from
The architecture changes which management components are required at each individual PDU. Connectivity can be shared within a Databus group, while central management runs in EnerTree Platform. This allows a simpler downstream hardware configuration.
There is also a direct software benefit: EnerTree DCEM software is included with the associated solution, with no recurring software license fees. Compared with an alternative requiring separate licenses or subscriptions for central energy management, this removes a recurring software cost.
That makes it worth looking beyond the purchase price of one PDU. Compare the cost of a complete installation with equivalent functionality over a defined period, such as five years:
- PDUs, communication modules and required metering or switching options.
- Network ports, cabling and IP address administration.
- Central software, licenses and subscriptions.
- VM hosting, storage, backups and availability provisions.
- Implementation, integration, configuration and training.
- Administration time, updates, support and replacement.
Competing solutions have different commercial models. Shared network access and included software are also available elsewhere. A project comparison with equivalent functions and terms establishes where the financial differences lie.
Schleifenbauer's proposition is clear: combine the right electrical configuration with centralized energy management, without recurring software license fees increasing as more PDUs are connected.
Live PDU monitoring for rack and phase loading
EnerTree Platform supports a measurement refresh rate of once per second. Operators can follow changes in supported readings and investigate how loading is distributed across racks, feeds and phases.
This is useful when connecting additional servers, investigating an alarm or comparing loading before and after a change. Historical data provides context: a low reading now does not show what happens during peak demand.
The value comes from combining live data, historical information and accurate mapping to the physical installation. A one-second refresh rate is different from capturing every short electrical event. Transient analysis and other short-duration investigations require the appropriate recording capabilities to be assessed separately.
Identify stranded capacity before expanding
Stranded capacity is capacity that appears to be available but cannot be used for additional IT load because of distribution constraints, physical limits or reservations. A rack may have room within its overall power budget while one phase or protected branch is already approaching its limit.
Measurements at the relevant levels help reveal the actual constraint. Outlet metering also helps relate connected equipment to its electrical load. Operators can then investigate whether redistribution is possible before ordering additional electrical infrastructure.
The assessment must account for peak loads and the required redundancy. With A/B supplies, the remaining feed may need to carry more load if the other feed fails. Adding the average loading of both feeds together is therefore not a reliable measure of expansion headroom.
EnerTree supports this investigation with measurements and trends. Making capacity usable then requires an engineering decision and, in some cases, a physical change.
Rack PDUs for AI HPC and HGX based servers
AI and HPC installations make the relationship between equipment, power distribution and monitoring particularly important. Multiple power supplies, high rack loading and changing workloads require the right outlet mix, phase distribution and capacity per feed.
For HGX-based servers, the PDU specification is determined by the actual OEM server model, its PSUs, power cords and redundancy design. The HGX name alone is not a complete electrical specification.
Schleifenbauer configures PDUs within the supported options for power input, outlets, cable entry, mounting and metering. Gateway connectivity and EnerTree add central visibility of the selected measurements.
When expanding an AI deployment, operators can compare the electrical design with measured use. Available rack capacity remains subject to the limits of the complete installation, including supplies, circuits and cooling. Monitoring does not increase the PDU's electrical rating.
Power quality alongside power and energy consumption
Kilowatt-hours alone do not always provide enough information to assess an electrical installation. Supported power quality measurements provide additional insight into loading and electrical conditions.
Relevant parameters include power factor, Total Harmonic Distortion or THD, crest factor and frequency. The available measurements depend on the selected hardware and firmware.
Examining these readings alongside loading and historical data helps operators investigate changes more precisely. Examples include comparing racks or reviewing conditions after equipment has been added. For specialist fault investigation, measurement resolution and recording capabilities must match the question being investigated.
Optional residual current monitoring can provide further information. This is a separate hardware option and is not automatically provided by using EnerTree Platform.
PUE reporting using the right measurements
Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE, compares the total energy used by a data center with the energy used by its IT equipment.
PUE = total data center energy / IT equipment energy, measured over the same period.
PDU measurements can contribute to the IT side of this ratio. A complete PUE calculation also requires facility-level measurements, with consistent measurement boundaries and periods. A single rack PDU therefore cannot determine the PUE of the whole data center on its own.
Bringing energy data together provides a better basis for reporting and investigating changes. Improvements in PUE or energy consumption then result from action taken on those findings, rather than from monitoring alone.
Centralized PDU configuration and firmware management
Repeatability matters as an installation grows. Naming, rack assignments and settings need to reflect how the operations team works.
EnerTree Platform provides central configuration and firmware management for supported devices. Batch operations allow multiple settings or devices to be managed from the same environment, reducing the need to access each PDU individually.
The REST API can support automated deployment, including onboarding, rack assignment and configuration. Zero Touch Provisioning becomes part of a configured workflow, with templates, permissions and integrations established in advance.
Role-based access and audit records help control who can make changes and track what has changed. Firmware updates remain a planned maintenance task, with compatibility checks, testing and recovery arrangements.
Configurable alarm thresholds help bring deviations to the operator's attention. Scheduled reports and supported export options make the same data useful for regular reviews and analysis. Suitable sensors can add environmental information such as temperature and humidity.
On premises hosting and integration with existing DCIM
EnerTree Platform is hosted within your own infrastructure. Normal operation does not require a connection to a Schleifenbauer cloud service. The customer determines network access and the configuration of the server environment.
This suits organizations that want to retain energy data within their own environment. Retention, backups and availability can be incorporated into existing IT management processes.
If a DCIM or BMS platform is already in place, the new PDU installation needs to work with it. Open APIs and supported protocols provide options for integrating data and workflows. Compatibility is established for the target platform, version and required data flow.
EnerTree is DCEM software for energy management, rather than a replacement for every DCIM function. It supports the associated Schleifenbauer devices. Integration with DCIM does not mean EnerTree automatically provides native management of every PDU brand.
Include security and availability in the design
Shared connectivity can reduce the number of separate network connections. The dedicated Daisy Chain Module adds a specific hardware distinction: it has no Ethernet port. This limits the Ethernet interfaces directly available at rack level.
Overall security still depends on the network, Gateway, EnerTree and access permissions. Segmentation, suitable protocols, account management and updates are part of implementation.
Centralization also makes the VM and communication links important to central management. Establish what remains available during a network or VM outage, and how alarms, data and management recover afterwards. Loss of communication and loss of electrical distribution must be assessed separately.
Hot-swappable communication modules can be replaced without interrupting outlet power when the prescribed procedure is followed. This supports maintenance and changes to the communication architecture.
Gateway with Platform or Controller with Lite
A Gateway with EnerTree Platform suits an installation requiring central visibility, historical data and management, with an appropriate VM environment available.
A Controller Module contains embedded EnerTree Lite software. This can suit local management or an environment where an external VM is not wanted. Lite also supports a range of management and integration functions and a Databus group; it provides more than a basic metering display.
The choice therefore depends on the management approach, required functions and scale. For specific colocation applications, Hybrid Mode can combine central operator visibility with local access through Controllers, using a supported configuration.
Existing power distribution can also be included in a modernization project. A Schleifenbauer Inline Meter can add measurement data from an existing feed. It does not add outlet metering or switching to the existing PDU.
Compare the complete solution for your next PDU project
A good PDU decision starts with the electrical requirements and includes a workable management environment. Schleifenbauer combines build-to-order rack PDUs with Gateway connectivity and included EnerTree Platform software.
This combination gives you a practical reason to review your specification: does the hardware fit the rack, are the right measurements available, and have the full costs of central management been included?
Schleifenbauer designs and manufactures in the Netherlands, with engineering, production, assembly and testing carried out in-house. This connects decisions about the electrical configuration directly with the expertise behind the product.

Frequently asked questions
What is a PDU with a Gateway Module
A PDU with a Gateway Module combines the selected electrical distribution, metering and optional switching functions with communication to EnerTree Platform. Central energy management runs as a virtual machine within the customer's infrastructure.
How many PDUs can be connected through one Gateway
A supported Databus group accommodates up to 100 PDUs per IP address, including the PDU with the active Gateway. The remaining 99 downstream PDUs can use Daisy Chain Modules, Gateway Modules in Daisy Chain mode or a combination of both.
Does every PDU need its own IP address
No. Within the supported Databus topology, the connected PDUs share connectivity through the active Gateway. Group size depends on the physical installation and requirements for management and availability.
Are there recurring software license fees for EnerTree Platform
No. EnerTree DCEM software is included with the associated solution, with no recurring software license fees. Hosting, implementation, integration and any additional services are scoped separately.
Is a Gateway PDU always cheaper than another intelligent PDU
The cost advantage depends on the complete configuration. Compare equivalent electrical specifications, metering, software, implementation and management periods. Included software is particularly relevant when the alternative requires separate central software licenses.
Can EnerTree help identify stranded capacity
Yes. Live and historical measurements help investigate loading and potential constraints. Usable capacity also depends on peak demand, phase distribution, protected circuits, redundancy and other physical limits.
Can EnerTree work alongside existing DCIM software
Yes. An integration can be configured through supported interfaces. Available data, read and write functions, and configuration requirements are checked for the target platform.
Is EnerTree Platform the same as EnerTree Lite
No. Platform runs centrally as a VM and is used with Gateway connectivity for PDU 5.0. Lite runs as embedded software on a Controller Module. The management requirements determine which architecture fits.
