The first edition of the 'Energy in Industry' event focused on technical solutions to consume less energy and use other energy sources. The current times are already different from a year ago. In the autumn of 2022, we talked about energy-intensive sectors and the disaster that befell the companies involved. We also had to replenish stocks very quickly, otherwise we would not get through the winter.
Current events show that we have once again been drawn into the heat of the battle. We still do that ourselves, but it seems to happen more often.
If you look at the 'Energy theme' in the long term, it is not about the costs at a random moment, but about sustainability and availability. The autumn of 2022 has given us that realization and the breadth of the industry does not want to be in that corner where the blows fall in the long term.
Imagine working at Tata Steel and being a speaker at this event. Carlet Hoes took up that challenge and she did so with verve. In her presentation she transparently addressed reality. That also meant that she wanted to show the improvements with a data-driven approach. She was asked several critical questions and people were genuinely curious about what Tata Steel sees as solutions.
The dialogue was entered into with respect for the social challenges. The industry is also part of the solution. As long as humanity cannot do without oil, gas, steel and food, the width of the chain will be needed to move to a new situation.
Her approach was appreciated. This was evident from the large number of selfies that visitors wanted to take with Hoes. The other speaker I saw this happen to was astronaut André Kuipers.
