At the Energy Storage event, Henry Lootens of Stichting Gelijkspanning Nederland will give a plenary presentation on the use, advantages and possibilities of direct current in our energy landscape. The generation of energy from sustainable energy sources such as solar panels and windmills and increasingly also the consumption is already DC. In addition, batteries in cars and batteries and batteries in mobile phones also work on DC. In order to arrive at a smart and future-proof solution, more work must be done on smart grids and storage.

According to Lootens, the biggest advantage of DC is not the energy efficiency, but the controllability of our energy system. Think of the rise of smart grids. The controllability of the power grid is much easier with DC than with AC. You can also control more power over the same cabling.”

Direct current is coming back into the picture, partly due to the sustainability of the energy supply and storage, says Lootens: “We already work a lot with direct current, because we work with solar panels and wind turbines.

In his presentation, Lootens looks ahead to the challenges and possible solutions that are needed in the field of smart grids and, very importantly, storage. For example, can smart and local DC grids provide for this?
