Synchron's DNA extraction system can purify DNA from up to 40,000 samples per day, using magnetic beads. This throughput is achieved by processing samples in a semi-serial manner rather than the traditional parallel processing of microtiter plates in a liquid handling robot. The DNA Cruiser therefore eliminates many annoying washing and waiting steps. The DNA cruiser is used in the agricultural industry for plant breeding. DNA is extracted from plant material.
To do this, the vegetable material is first crushed by shaking it with small metal balls. This creates a molecular soup. To separate the DNA from the other material in the soup, metal microspheres are introduced into the soup. The DNA attaches to the microspheres, the other material remains loose in the microtiter plates. Liquid is sprayed and extracted at various stations until clean DNA material remains. The microtiter plates are automatically placed on carriers, which are guided along the various stations on a carousel. Pipette tips are automatically changed and the metal balls are inserted. A record with 96 samples takes 20 minutes from start to finish, with a new one every 2.5 minutes.
The DNA Cruiser falls under Synchron's AgBio product line. Designed for and with customers in the seed industry. For more information, please contact us.
