Disseminating knowledge among the younger generation is a critical step towards a more scientifically literate society. In recent years, several initiatives and events have been organized to bridge the gap between research and schools. Two such events are Girls' Day and Science is Wonderful, in which researchers from the Power Electronics and EMC group of the University of Twente participated.
Girls' Day, an initiative of VHTO, is intended to inspire girls for a career in science/technology. Science is Wonderful! is another such event that gives primary and secondary school pupils the opportunity to get in touch with leading researchers. Science is Wonderful! took place in Brussels on 16 and 17 March 2023.
As researchers in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, we participated in both events to showcase our research. For the younger students, we had experiments that introduced them to the concepts of electricity and magnetism. We showed the simplest forms of signals, interference and shielding, and explained how electromagnetic waves surround us and how they can be used to transmit information. For the older students, we had the VIRC to explain the basics of EMC testing and why it is essential to have devices tested. We explained how EMC testing ensures that devices are safe and reliable and that they do not interfere with other electronic devices. We also discussed the importance of electromagnetic compatibility in various fields such as healthcare, automotive, aerospace and defense.
Spreading knowledge to the younger generation is crucial to inspire them to pursue STEM careers. The participation of leading researchers and innovators in events such as Girls’ Day and Science is Wonderful! provides an excellent platform for students to connect with them and learn about the latest developments in science and technology. By making science accessible and exciting to students, we can create a more scientifically literate society, which will ultimately benefit future generations.
The EMC-ESD association also finds it extremely important that the younger generation gets acquainted with the field and the association. That is why student members can register as a member free of charge. Click here For more information.
