Refinery gas is typically consumed as a fuel gas. Because refinery gas is a mixture of the lightest hydrocarbon streams generated during refinery processes, it is essential to determine its composition.

Da Vinci Laboratory Solutions (DVLS) has developed a new GC solution for the rapid analysis of refinery gases. In just 9 minutes, the DVLS Fast Refinery Gas Analyzer (RGA) determines the hydrocarbon content, permanent gases and hydrogen sulfide in refinery and liquefied gases. The RGA system is based on the Agilent 7890B GC configured with three different channels, special columns, valves, an inlet and three detectors. The “multi-channel” configuration of the RGA allows the gas samples to be injected into the individual channels simultaneously:

  • the FID channel determines the C1-C5 and C6+ group
  • the Back TCD channel separates oxygen/argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide
  • the Aux TCD channel determines Helium and hydrogen

The RGA is designed with a unique “Side Carrier” with heated zones that contains the cranes and columns. This unique design reduces system downtime during periodic regeneration of the separation column. Furthermore, the RGA complies with the various standard test methods of ASTM, DIN, EN, IP, ISO and UOP to determine the composition of the refinery and liquefied gases.

Automated reporting of gas properties

The GC is controlled by Agilent OpenLab software. The DVLS PetroReporter software automates all aspects of calibration, gas analysis by reporting gas calculations such as BTU or calorific value, emission factor, carbon content, molar mass and relative density.
