In multi-pole signal interfaces for robots and automatic machines, the earth connection often plays a special role. It takes up a large part of the installation time. For this reason, HARTING has increased the contact density of the Han D® series inserts for power and signal transmission. While the power and signal contacts of this series are equipped with crimp terminals – therefore ideally suited for prefabrication in large quantities while maintaining high quality – the PE contact has previously only been designed as a screw terminal for field use. The new Han DDD® insert uses PE cavities for the first time, which require Han D® crimp contacts.
Reduction of assembly time and costs
The changeover of the PE connection from conventional screw fastening to crimp contacts (Han D®) increases the quality of the earth conductor and reduces the assembly time for the entire connector. Costs for the wire end ferrules and for the tools required to attach the wire end ferrules, which are usually associated with the screw fastening alternative, are eliminated.
The need for space-saving solutions is a fundamental issue in machinery, robotics and automation. That is why HARTING developed the Han® D® series, which stands for high contact density and small dimensions. The Han® DDD has twice the number of contacts than the previous standard (up to 130 % of contact surface) – yet the same dimensions and electrical properties.

The higher power density was achieved using the following methods:
- extending the creepage distances between the contacts using accessories;
- use of an improved PE connection to free up space in the insulation material for additional contact chambers;
- use of an offset arrangement of chambers to reduce the distance between the rows of contacts.
The Han® DDD can thus optimize the use of interfaces in conventional control cabinets. Existing contact surfaces for interfaces in, for example, robotics are used more efficiently. Space-saving applications are possible in all industrial sectors where electrical connections play a role.
Thanks to the crimping technique used, interfaces that combine Han D® contacts with Han® DDD monoblocks high-quality connectivity. In order to achieve consistently good contact quality, users must choose between service crimping tools for small quantities and fully automatic crimping machines for producing larger volumes. All processing tools are perfectly matched to the contacts offered by HARTING.
