How do you create awareness and a good safety culture?
When working with chemicals, safety is number one, but how do you create awareness among analysts to ensure their own safety and that of the environment? A number of speakers at the LabSafety event will explain how they involve employees in the theme of safe working. For example, Michel Stuyts from BASF how his role as a safety coach contributes to reducing the number of accidents. Then Marloes Nieuwenhuis from Saxion insight into the Safety curriculum for HBO Life Science and how the practical tips from this program can be applied in the business world.
Early 2011, BASF took the initiative to work with departmental safety coaches. The aim is to reduce the number of accidents. A coach has been appointed per department of an average of 450 people. This departmental safety coach forms the buffer between the central EHS organization and operations/maintenance and support services. The main focus is behavior and culture. Michel Stuyts will talk about this safety initiative in his presentation. He will also explain how the lab deals with occupational safety. Initiatives, results and improvements will also be discussed.
Marloes Nieuwenhuis provides practical tips, assignments and ideas from the Safety for HBO Life Science curriculum during her presentation. This curriculum shows how students are introduced to the dangers of (unwanted) chemical reactions, run-a-ways, explosions and toxic gas clouds. In addition, the program focuses on creating a good safety culture and assessing the risks before and during working in a lab or outside. Experience how Saxion teaches these themes to students and how this can also be applied within the business community.
