Smart lighting, IoT, connected and sensors are terms that are often used to show the technological developments that make buildings smarter. The intended possibilities ensure a pleasant stay in the building, a healthy climate and good lighting.
Internet connections, processor power and sensor data also provide opportunities to third parties. Unintended possibilities such as a DDOS attack from the smart lighting, the loss of privacy of the building users or unauthorized access to the building. The consequences of this have varying impact, but should never be a surprise.
Bas Labordus works at The S-Unit as a security consultant and certified chief information security officer. Recent Smart Building hacks as described in the NOS article earlier this year, are discussed during Bas Labordus' presentation. According to Bas Labordus, the question: "How bad is a possible hack?" should always be asked and security should be installed based on this question.
During the Bits, Bricks & Behaviour conference, visitors will gain insight into the thinking and actions of a hacker. Guidelines will also be provided on how to limit the consequences of a hack. Learn to think like a hacker, learn to ask the right questions to the client of the project and the supplier of the applied facilities. Learn to think beyond the front door of the system; if someone enters without permission, what access can they gain? And what are the consequences for digital and physical security?
The consequences of a DDOS attack are different from the consequences of a hack where people in a company can be followed or where panic can be caused by a hack. Hacking a database with personal data can have far-reaching consequences. The design and setup of the security will therefore have to be of a different level.
In daily life, people are constantly hacking, objects and materials are made for a specific purpose. Through the creativity of people, these objects and materials are “hacked” and used for other purposes than they were made for. A hacker will always look for a creative way to penetrate a system.
During the day the Bits, Bricks & Behavior conference Bas Labordus will give a lecture on recent smart building hacks and their consequences. Curious?
