The arrival of 5G and its impact on the market and society was one of the main themes at the 2019 edition of the Telecom Infra event.

Visitors gathered in the Breepark in Breda for the event organized by the Industrial Electronics sector. In the morning, Tim Poulus (Telecompaper) talked about the arrival of next-generation networks, while Titia Houwing from KPN discussed the role that 5G can play in society.

After these lectures, the visitor could visit three tracks. For example, there was discussion about Virtual RANs, how 5G signals should be measured with new equipment and the advantages and disadvantages of radio links.

After lunch, visitors to the Telecom Infra event could listen to Johan Bil from Reichle & De-Massari, among others. He sketched a picture of the future in which the demand for more bandwidth and guaranteed availability will continue to increase. Trends such as AI and self-driving cars were also mentioned.

Frank Brouwer from Dirksen Opleidingen delved into the technical specifications of 5G. Issues such as bandwidth, network slicing and the classification of subcarriers were discussed, among other things. The conclusion was clear: 5G is a mobile all-rounder, an umbrella standard with many options.

Joop Verhagen from Arcadis concluded the event with his lecture on smart cities. It became clear that 5G will play a key role if all speculations about smart cities become reality.

All in all, the Telecom Infra event was a broadly oriented event, with a particular focus on emerging mobile standards. It remains to be seen which new technology will be discussed in 2020.
