Collection of waste electrical equipment can and should be improved
The collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment in the Netherlands can and must be improved. This is the conclusion of the first monitoring report of the Foundation Organisation Producer Responsibility E-waste Netherlands (OPEN) for 2021. The foundation writes this in its cover letter with the report to the State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management.
Producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment must report the equipment they place on the market. They must also ensure the collection and recycling of the equipment when it is discarded. Until 1 May 2021, Stichting RTA organised this for the producers and importers affiliated with FHI. After that, Stichting OPEN this role of RTA taken over.
In the Netherlands, a collection target for waste electrical and electronic equipment of 65% applies. This percentage is based on the total weight of electrical and electronic equipment sold in the Netherlands in the past three years. Within Stichting OPEN, Stichting Metalektro Recycling, SMR, represents the product groups of the members of FHI. Our trade association currently plays an active role in the advisory board of SMR, where consultation takes place on specific activities and projects aimed at achieving the target of 65%.
