In a time of challenges and opportunities, Jacco Vonhof, chairman of MKB-Nederland, delivered a powerful message of hope and resilience during the change of management from FHI. With a focus on trust, predictability and simplification, Vonhof emphasized the key role of entrepreneurs in tackling the major issues that the Netherlands will face in the near future.

Developments in The Hague and the main lines agreement

Vonhof provides an overview of current developments in The Hague and the major issues facing society: the labor market, climate ambitions, the energy transition and digitalization. “We hope to soon have a new cabinet that will formulate answers to these issues and give entrepreneurs the space and confidence to contribute to the solutions,” says Vonhof. “More rules and reporting obligations do not help, but trust in entrepreneurs does.” Nevertheless, Vonhof expresses his appreciation for the new outline agreement, although he believes there is still a lot of work to be done. “Our response on behalf of MKB-Nederland was positive, with caveats. We are now seeing a return to some of the things we have advocated in recent years,” he says. Despite challenges such as the labor market and tax obstacles, Vonhof sees positive developments and opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The Three Rs: trust, predictability and simplification

Vonhof states that one of the essences of effective entrepreneurship is the trust, not only of entrepreneurs in the government, but also of the government in its entrepreneurs. He emphasizes the need to evolve from a situation in which government action was mainly characterized by regulation and control to an environment where trust and cooperation prevail.

Another crucial aspect that Vonhof highlights is the need for predictability in policy. With the current challenges in terms of the labor market, climate ambitions and energy transition, he emphasizes the need for policy measures that provide stability and clarity to entrepreneurs so that they can make informed decisions for the long term.

Finally, Vonhof argues for simplification of regulations and procedures. He emphasizes that complexity and bureaucracy create unnecessary obstacles for entrepreneurs to thrive and drive innovation. By simplifying processes and reducing administrative burdens, entrepreneurs can focus on what they are best at: entrepreneurship.

Collaboration and innovation as key to success

According to Vonhof, the close cooperation between FHI and MKB-Nederland is essential for achieving common goals. “As a trade association, FHI specifically represents the interests of its members in the technical and industrial sector. The broad representation of MKB-Nederland includes various sectors, including catering, funeral directors and BOVAG members. Combining knowledge and expertise enables us to jointly tackle important issues that affect all entrepreneurs,” Vonhof explains.

Jacco Vonhof adds that this collaboration also enables MKB-Nederland to put forward specific interests of different sectors to government agencies, such as the House of Representatives, civil servants and departments such as Economic Affairs and Social Affairs. “We are in constant dialogue with policymakers at all levels, both within and outside The Hague, to influence policies that impact the business community.”

“With the recent appointment of a new chairman of FHI, who, like his predecessors, strongly believes in the power of collaboration, we remain committed to the interests of entrepreneurs,” says Vonhof. “Collaboration strengthens our position and enables us to continue to effectively advocate for a favorable business climate. So although there is no big news today, we will continue to promote the interests of the Dutch business community.”

Call to action

Vonhof calls on entrepreneurs to actively contribute to the future of the Netherlands: “We have to get to work ourselves. Not only in The Hague, but also locally, in your own region. During the corona pandemic, entrepreneurs have shown what they are capable of. We need that same spirit of innovation and collaboration again now,” says Vonhof.

“The message of resilience and optimism underlines the role of entrepreneurs as a driving force behind progress in the Netherlands.” Vonhof emphasizes that the future of the Netherlands lies in the hands of those who see and seize opportunities every day, regardless of the challenges that come their way. “Entrepreneurship and a positive attitude are essential for the progress of the Netherlands. With trust, predictability and simplification as core principles, and by promoting cooperation and innovation, we can jointly tackle the major challenges of our time and ensure a prosperous future for the Netherlands,” said Jacco Vonhof, chairman of MKB-Nederland.
