The government has established 25 missions within the framework of the mission-driven Top Sectors and Innovation Policy. Technologies such as photonics, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and digital innovations play a key role in this.

The missions have according to the cabinet the goal to strengthen the Dutch economy within the social themes of energy transition & sustainability; agriculture, water & food; health & care and safety. State Secretary Mona Keijzer (Economic Affairs and Climate) states that the missions of SME to large companies offer the opportunity to get started.

The letter from the cabinet mentions smart industry, where robots create custom-made products without waste. Smart farming, where sensors help to optimize harvests, is also seen as a spearhead, as is laser technology in the medical sector.

The top sectors will work with ministries and knowledge institutions to draw up knowledge and innovation agendas based on the missions and key technologies. The government promises to announce at a later stage how the available financial resources will be deployed.
