Brief economic corona news from January 26

- The RIVM reports 3,997 new infections for Tuesday, 123 fewer than the day before. The number of new hospital admissions with corona patients decreased by 30 to 73 on Tuesday.
- The British variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster than expected in the Netherlands and is now estimated to have already reached a third of the registered infections. That says the RIVM. The South African version has also surfaced in the Netherlands: 14 people have been found with this variant.
- In the Netherlands, 173,638 first dose injections were distributed on Tuesday, approximately 1 percent of the population. The figures can now be found on the corona dashboard of the central government. Similar statistics are reported in Germany tracked per second.
- VNO/NCW and MKB-Nederland 'strongly' condemn the riots and looting. The two employers' organizations also state: in a statement that many entrepreneurs are particularly affected by the rioters and are calling on the government to continue to take tough action
- The focus of large pharmaceutical companies on the development of corona vaccines is putting a significant brake on much other necessary research. This can be concluded from the annual Access to Medicine Index.
- Trade union FNV wants the outgoing cabinet to invest billions in the economy to prevent a hard landing and sky-high unemployment after the corona crisis. This is what Vice-Chairman Tuur Elzinga says in De Telegraaf. According to the FNV, the Netherlands must use the 5.6 billion euros from the European Recovery Fund for investments as quickly as possible.
