Product life cycle management (PLM) is the process that maps the entire life cycle of a product. This is important when certain components or materials required for a particular product are no longer available or extremely long delivery times occur. Then the search for a replacement with the same functionalities and specifications begins. This is also called obsolescence management. During the seminar 'Life cycle management: from zero to hero' on Wednesday September 27 during Electronics & Applications 2023, a development company, a distributor/manufacturer of components, a database provider and a provider of supply chain solutions will delve deeper into various aspects of PLM.
In recent years, the electronics industry supply chain has faced a perfect storm. Corona, geopolitical influences, factory fires and the war between Ukraine and Russia led to enormous shortages of components. As the supply chain recovers, a 'hangover effect' is emerging. Jack Moore van Converge talks in his lecture about how the entire chain must continuously adapt.
Alexander Friebe from Würth Elektronik discusses the Product Change Management process from the manufacturer's point of view during his seminar. He highlights the importance of a correct and timely Product Change Notification & Product Termination Notification (PCN/PTN) process and how smart PCN collaboration can be implemented. Friebe also discusses the rise of component databases such as 'IHS' and 'Silicon Expert'. The challenge as a manufacturer is to fill these databases with correct information.
The reading of Antonio Cruz, Silicon Expert, talks about component aging. Silicon Expert continuously studies what happens with PCNs, PDNs, EOL notifications and anything else that can derail a production process. Because although the risks largely lie with products with long certification processes, products for the consumer market are not automatically safe either.
Richard van der Werf (Dizain-Sync) discusses the usefulness of a well-designed component database. Such a database helps you select the right components for your design. In our work we have seen different approaches to managing the component data. In this presentation, Van der Werf wants to discuss best practices on how to manage component data and what options are available.
The afternoon session ends with a group discussion about component databases.
