Last week Timo (Senior Engineer IoT / SW development) and Jan (Operational Director) were allowed to give a guest lecture to the students of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.

We took the students of the Internet of Things (IoT) course into the world of edge IoT and Modbus communicationIt was an interactive session, where we brought theory and practice together in a fun and practical way.

Bringing technology to life

With our experience in IoT solutions, we were able to take the students well into what edge computing exactly entails. Edge computing ensures that data is processed directly at the source. This is ideal for applications where speed and security play a major role.

In addition, we explained Modbus – a widely used communication protocol in industrial environments. This protocol ensures that devices can easily exchange information with IoT Clouds. Very useful for smart applications.

Hands-on demo with a twist

After the theory came the most fun part: the interactive demo. We showed the students how to use Node-RED, a popular platform, can read and process real-time data from various sensors. The data was immediately visible on a dashboard. This made the advantages of edge computing immediately clear. No hassle with central clouds; the processing is simply done directly on site.

This gave the students a clear picture of how data from industrial devices such as Modbus can be forwarded to a cloud environment, where it can then be monitored remotely. For many, this was a real eye-opener.

A curious new generation

Timo and Jan were very impressed by the students. They were enthusiastic, eager to learn and asked smart questions about, for example, the scalability of edge IoT and the integration of data.

It is great to see that the new generation of IoT specialists is already preparing themselves so well for the future. Especially the growing demand for smart solutions, such as Private LTE/5G and industrial IoT solutions, impressed them. These types of innovations are exactly where the future is headed.

A day full of energy

The guest lecture at Hogeschool Rotterdam was a real success. Both for the students and for us. By working together with educational institutions like this, we contribute to developing the skills needed to continue innovating the IoT world.

We hope for many more collaborations like this! This way we can continue to inspire the next generation of IoT specialists.
