Meeting May 18: Ultrafine Particles – Air Quality and Climate
Information about the organization of the meeting
Due to the pandemic and its impact on the planning of conferences and meetings in 2021, the traditional Ultrafine Particles Symposium, held every two years in Brussels, will be postponed to 2022. In order to maintain scientific and societal contact and exchange on that topic, a very concise, three-hour online meeting will be organized free of charge. In the meantime, there is enough experience with digital tools for teaching and meetings all over the world. Nevertheless, this online meeting 2021 does not replace the current symposium.
Ultrafine Particles
Ultrafine particles (UFP), the nano-fraction of particulate matter in the air, are (expected to) cause serious health and environmental impacts. Combustion is a major source, also through the production of volatile organic pollutants that are converted by photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Increasing applications of man-made nanomaterials are aggravating the problem.
Another interest arises from the specific role in atmospheric processes such as cloud formation and precipitation and, in fact, in climate. The relationship between UFP and human health and that of UFP and climate are both areas of active research and cross-connections between these fields are now being found.
Scientific focus of the 2021 online meeting
The scientific focus of the 2021 online meeting will be on traffic and energy-related sources of ultrafine particles and mechanisms of the impact of ultrafine particles on the brain and lungs. Exposure effects from recent lockdown episodes will be assessed.
