A Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) is a test system that allows the performance of radio frequency and microwave devices to be characterized in terms of S-parameters. A VNA achieves highly accurate measurements by correcting the systematic errors in the instrument, the characteristics of cables, adapters and test fixtures. Ferdinand Gerhardes from Anritsu In his presentation he discusses a distributed modular 2-port VNA.

In his presentation, the speaker shows a new modular concept, which is based on Non Linear Transmission Line (NLTL). The technology is explained in which two 1-port VNAs can operate as a “fully reverse” 2-port VNA system. With innovations in this technology, two 1-port VNAs can be synchronized and take measurements over a distance of up to 100 meters or more. Without phase errors and without loss of dynamic range up to 43.5 GHz. The speaker will discuss both the technology and the possible applications.

Nonlinear transmission line technology (NLTL) has traditionally been used for pulse shaping applications and in digitalizing oscilloscopes. Over the years it has proven itself as a very credible, robust technology. It has been refined by Anritsu for

use at high frequencies and supplemented with new monolithic broadband directional bridges, multiplexers and other key components, resulting in NLTL-based samplers and distributed harmonic generators. This offers opportunities for a high-performance frequency-scalable VNA architecture.
