How do you ensure a reliable pH measurement in a process stream full of polymers? At BASF Heerenveen, pH fluctuations caused disruptions in the ultrafiltration plant: insufficient polymer was captured at a pH that was too low or unstable. This had an impact on efficiency and reliability of the water treatment plant.
The solution was an inline pH measurement with automatic sensor cleaning. The installation consists of a Knick Stratos Multi transmitter, combined with a Knick UniClean 720 and a pneumatically actuated retractable fixture. The sensor is automatically retracted from the process pipeline and cleaned, fully integrated into the process.
As a result, BASF Heerenveen is experiencing a greatly reduced sensor contamination and a long-term stable pH measurement, without process interruption and with hardly any manual intervention. “The pH measurement remains stable: even after six months, recalibration was not yet necessary,” says Mark Lazonder, Asset Manager BASF Netherlands.
