The Design Automation & Embedded Systems event, this year in the Van der Valk Hotel in Eindhoven, again included many interesting lectures in the seminar program. The arrival of 5G and the application of artificial intelligence by smaller companies were some notable topics.

Intel's David Thomas delivered the introductory keynote. He talked about the versatility of FPGAs and the increasing demand for such circuits for IoT applications, among other things. His lecture was followed by a presentation by Hans Leijting and Eric Kroon, who work at Nokia Solutions and Technology. They sketched, as they did before in a interview with FHI, the impact of 5G on the industry.

The parallel lecture program had up to five lectures per round, highlighting a wide range of themes. For example, Ron van den Houten from Dytos talked about how a design for a Human Machine Interface can be designed as optimally as possible, while a presentation by Kurt van Buul (Twincomm) dealt with secure communication via Industrial Ethernet connections.

Also the lecture entitled 'In Circuit vs. Functional Test, or why test at all?' gave the audience new insights. For example, Gerome Yacoub from Digital Test gave a clear summary of the advantages and disadvantages of functional tests versus in-circuit tests. Yves Grillet from Future Electronics also delved into the topic of Ethernet. He addressed the question of which interfaces can best be used for embedded applications. Joel Kraan van Alten talked about performing robust firmware upgrades. This process requires good preparation.

The closing keynote came from Jonathan Berte of Robotronics. With his company he is making strong progress in the field of machine learning. In an earlier interview with FHI he already addressed the question of how European industry can use artificial intelligence, including by naming concrete applications.

At the information market, D&E visitors could visit the stands of the various exhibitors. With new, important technological developments every year, the next edition of the D&E event will probably again be richly filled with informative lectures.
