Safety and safe working in a laboratory is a dire necessity. The LabSafety event addresses this theme and seeks depth with safety experts from the market and the research world. The 2023 edition attracted many visitors: more than 250 professionals from the laboratory sector were present in Vianen.

Occupational hygienist Corné Bulkmans (Muopo and Stichting PHOV) opened LabSafety 2023 as chairman. Bulkmans spoke about the various points of attention when drawing up a legally required RI&E, or Risk Inventory and Evaluation. Among other things, the question was raised whether you should start working on an RI&E yourself or whether it is sometimes better to outsource this job (partly).

After a number of elevator pitches from exhibitors – to be found on the exhibition floor – it was time for the lecture of Ilja de Lange (Substances Manager). Her lecture dealt with the safety data sheet (VIB). A VIB is a complex document. De Lange gave tips on how lab employees can quickly find the right information. FHI spoke to Ilja de Lange earlier.

Lise van den Heuvel (Vestius Advocaten, partner of FHI Advies) discussed the complicated and sometimes vague regulations regarding privacy legislation. The lab world also has to comply with these rules, and that is not always easy.

Fire is also a potential hazard in laboratories. Bart Rienstra of CBRA provided text and explanation about ADR classes, new rules for Li-ion batteries and various fire extinguishing systems. Arnold Overdevest (GSC BV) spoke under the title 'puzzling for a safe working environment with gases' about dealing with gases and drawing up a RI&E.

A well-functioning ventilation is a must in every laboratory. Frans Godthelp of VCCN gave a detailed presentation on sustainable methods of ventilation. Of course, the safety aspect was also discussed.

Lidy van der Voort (Travocs) dealt with the ADR regulations. These European regulations for the international transport of dangerous goods by road are complex and require specialization. As ADR safety advisor, Van der Voort provided insight into how dangerous substances from the lab should be safely removed in accordance with the regulations.

LabSafety 2023 was concluded with a summary by the chairman and the traditional drinks. During this, the visitors to the event once again engaged in discussions with representatives of the exhibiting companies.
